pt conferences
Tomorrow starts another round of parent/teacher conferences. I enjoy the chance to talk with parents. I enjoy sharing the joys of teaching their child. But when you have a child who is failing miserably and you try to get this across to parents all quarter long and you have to tell a parent you cannot, in your porfessional discretion, pass their child to the next grade unless they do a total 180 (not 360k, because then you're back where you started...)It's hard to break that news, even though the parent should know it is coming.
Parents- and I know there are quite a few who read my page- (not of my students!) the best thing you can do for your child is let them do things on their own once in a while. When your child is nearly 10 years old, and you have to carry their bookbag to their locker and unpack it for them, that's a bad sign. When your child gives you attitude for asking him or her to do something right, don't take it!
You may think you are just being nice, but what you are teaching your child is that they cannot do things on their own, they are not going to have the ability to do things independently.
It's really sad. But, it happens.
